Design and maintenance of workforce management tools to digitalise the offices of small enterprises.

Over the last couple of years, I supported a local startup with the design and growth maintenance of a cross-platform toolsuite facilitating workforce management tasks such as labour & time tracking for small enterprises. The startup has grown by 125% per year since the beginning our collaboration.

Starting with strategy

Based on a tech and market analysis I mapped out a roadmap to illustrate the growth of the platform from a single feature to a comprehensive system of team management tools across several touchpoints: web, tablet, mobile (Android/iOS).

This enabled us to start a long-term collaboration based on a shared vision that also provided a structure for future decision making.

Pulling insights out of marketing and CS data

Even though the target audience was already set from the beginning, the client understood the importance of a listening to the user. Since the launch there are continuously open communication channels by marketing and customer support resulting in many valuable insights and needs that were addressed later-on.

Additionally, we conducted contextual research and remote user testings to make sure that the design not only addresses our users' needs but also their general stance against technology. When creating a mobile app for a specific group of personas for example, we conducted initial research which we later enhanced with intensive remote user testing and concept validation.

Digitalization for tech-averse audiences

A particular challenge was the audience's relationship with tech: Not being digital natives, users evidenced a strong tendency to avoid anything digital and a hard time understanding even the most conventional patterns. At the same time wanting to stay competitive meant that they had to use technology as a means to optimise their workflows.

Crewmeister works that dissonant relationship by providing a particularly clear and user-friendly interface that can be operated easily even by those who usually don't interact with digital technology at all. It emphasises consistency, accessibility and feedback as a means to make users feel comfortable and confident.
